The Beauty of Darfur, The Tragedy of Genocide
On November 4, Falmouth High School students in Nancy Durst’s Advanced Art class show cased their work in the First Friday Art Walk in Portland. It was a very powerful evening and well attended by hundreds. Students spent time working with El Fadel Arab, a Darfur survivor, who talked with them about the beauty of Darfur and the tragedy of the genocide. They did further research and created two pieces that represented the beauty and tragedy. Pihcintu, a children’s immigrant choir, performed followed by a dialog with former Maine Congressman, Tom Andrews, CEO of United to End Genocide. VIA Agency, a marketing firm, hosted the event in their beautiful building, the former Baxter Library. This event was in collaboration with VIA Agency, USM Office of Multi-Cultural Student Affairs, Fur Cultural Revival, and NAACP Portland branch.
